A Little Chickie is About to Hatch… – Paper Funday May DT Card

5 · 06 · 25

For this month’s Paper Funday Challenge, I was tasked with either using products from Altenew or Picket Fence, or making a card according to this month’s twist: Celebrate Something New! I had just used Altenew last month and my Picket Fence order has not come in yet, plus a dear friend is having her baby shower next week, so I figured…why not go with the twist this time?

So I created a charming interactive pop-up card that starts sweet and simple, then ends with a joyful burst of celebration—a perfect little surprise for my friend’s baby shower. Plus, other than creating the pop-up bits, this card was quick and simple since I was able to repurpose the colored stamp from a “failed” attempt at an Easter card that was sitting in my scraps!

little chickie baby shower card feature an egg on a blue plaid background with text across the egg saying "A little chickie is about to hatch..."

🧺 The Outside: Sweet and Subtle

The card front features a large soft egg shape nestled on top of a blue-and-cream gingham background—classic, cozy, and just mysterious enough. The sentiment “A little chickie is about to hatch…” sets the stage for the big moment inside. I just freehand cut the egg (I know, I know…you can tell ;)), quickly created a sentiment in Adobe Illustrator, then printed and fussy cut it out.

🎉 The Inside: TA-DA! Chickie Pop-Up

A pop up featuring two wings that extend as the card opens from underneath a rectangle panel, topped with a chicken bursting out of an egg with the sentiment "Congratulations!" across it. The inside of the card is layered with two different green designer papers.

Open the card and—surprise!—an adorable chick (digistamp by me and available now in my shop!) bursts out of a cracked egg, wings up, stars shining, ready to party. This pop-up box card format adds dimension and whimsy, with floral and swan-themed papers creating a magical, storybook vibe. I followed a tutorial by Mitosu Crafts to create the hideaway pop-up mechanism.

After the pictures were taken, I affixed a small white panel to the middle of the pop-up that had a personal message for my friend, as well as decided to add some rhinestones to the hideaway panels.

As with the front sentiment, I created the “Congratulations!” sentiment with Pacifico font in Adobe Illustrator, printed, and cut it out. I also thought that this could be a good graduation card if I made a little mortarboard that I could have glued onto the chick’s head!

💫 Final Thoughts

I love cards that hide a little magic behind a clean front—and this one has just the right balance of sweetness, surprise, and springtime sparkle. Let me know if you’d like a tutorial on how I make this pop-up box style—I’ve got tips to make it less intimidating than it looks!
